Originating from Guangzhou Railway Mechanical School, which was built in May 1974, and affiliated to Guangzhou Railway (Group) Corporation (today’s China Railway Guangzhou Group, abbreviated as Guangzhou Railway),Guangzhou Railway Polytechnic (GRP) was officially founded in 2000 upon approval. In September 2004, the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality took over the administration over the GRP.

Now GRP has developed as the only public higher vocational college in rail transit in Guangdong Province. It is included in the“Double High-level Plan” and acclaimed as the National High Quality Vocational College of China, the National Model (Key) Vocational College of China and the Top-Rated Higher Vocational College in Guangdong Province. It also serves as an important staff training base for rail transit enterprises in South China. GRP has been awarded titles of “Model School for National Vocational Colleges in Employment Competitiveness”, “One of National Top 100 Vocational Colleges in Employment Rate”, “National Innovation and Invention Education Base for Higher Vocational Colleges”, “High Quality Provincial Training Base for Vocational School Teachers Accredited by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance”, “Unit Member of Chinese Society of Vocational and Technical Education”, “Vice Chair Unit of Innovative and Entrepreneurship Education Branch of China Association of Higher Education”, “Chair Unit of National Professional Education Steering Committee of Railway Power Supply Technology”, “Chair Unit of National Professional Education Steering Committee of Rail Transit Power Supply Technology”, “Model School in Guangdong Province for Running Colleges by Law”, etc.

GRP now boasts multiple campuses in Shimen, Huanggang and Zhixinnan as well as Chaoyang Training Center and Huadu Demonstration Park for Work-integrated Learning. The construction of the new campus in Guangzhou Science and Education City is in progress. GRP offers 35 programs including Railway Power Supply Technology, Mechanical Manufacture and Automation, Urban Rail Transit Operation Management, Railway Signals and Automatic Control, Urban Rail Transit Vehicle Technology, Business English and Railway Engineering Technology. The college accommodates over 10,000 full-time students and has 9 teaching schools (departments): School of Electrical Engineering, School of Electromechanical Engineering, School of Transportation and Logistics, School of Information Engineering, School of Foreign Language and Trade, School of Locomotive, School of Railway Engineering, School of Marxism, and Basic Course Department.

GRP has excellent school running conditions and teaching staff. The total value of instruments and equipment for teaching and scientific research is RMB 280 million; there are 580,000 paper books and 980,000 electronic books; 73.40% of full-time teachers are postgraduates and 33.30% have senior professional titles. At present, there are 1 National Excellent Teacher, 1 Provincial Teaching Celebrity of Higher Education, 2 Provincial Teaching Celebrities included in the “Special Talents Support Program”, 1 director of “Dual-Qualification” Teacher Workshop of Provincial Vocational Education, 2 National Workshops for Craftsmen, 6 Provincial Excellent Teaching Teams and 6 Municipal Sci-tech Innovation Teams.

GRP focuses on students’ employment and delivers fruitful results. It recruits students from 20 provinces (regions) such as Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Henan, and Inner Mongolia; graduates can find best-fit jobs. The average initial employment rate of graduates is 98.51%, and the average employment counterpart rate is 93.30%. The proportion of “Order-based Employment” by regional leading enterprises in rail transit reaches over 65% and the satisfaction rate of enterprises reaches 98%. The employment counterpart rate and salary level of graduates are among the best in Guangdong province. Xie Dongtian, the winner of the 2012 National May 1st Labor Medal of Shenzhen Metro Group Co., Ltd., Wu Huachuang, the winner of the “Locomotives Medal” of the China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., Ltd. in 2014, Lai Zetuan, the winner of the “National Railway Model Worker” of the China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., Ltd. in 2014, Xu Zhibiao, the winner of the 2014 National May 1st Labor Medal of the Guangzhou Metro Group, and Chen Chengyi, the representative of the 19th National Congress of Fujian Province and the winner of the National Model Worker, Hong Haiyang, the craftsman of China Railway and the leader in the New Century National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project, and Lin Zhanxiong, the winner of champion in 2019 China Vocational Skills Competition are all alumni of our college.

GRP focuses more on teaching and scientific research and produces fruitful outcomes. There are 151 national landmark achievements (421 items), including 3 Teaching Achievement Awards, 2 Teaching Resource Libraries, 4 teaching ability contest awards for teachers, 25 skill contest awards for students, 3 teaching program standards, 411 patents and 114 software copyrights. There are 287 provincial-level iconic achievements (434 items), including 10 Teaching Achievement Awards, 53 skill contest awards for students, 42 teaching ability contest awards for teachers, 3 Teaching Resource Libraries and skill-competition host for 8 programs.

Featuring deep integration of industry and education, GRP delivers quality services. GRP makes full use of the dual advantages of both industry-based school running experience and the government’s strong support to establish the Guangdong Provincial Model Vocational Education Group-Guangzhou Industrial Transportation Vocational Education Group; leads the formation of the South China “Belt and Road” Rail Transit Industry-education Integration Alliance (the “Industry-education Integration Alliance for short”), actively aligns with the strategy of high-speed railway “going global” to jointly train local talents, and exports teaching and training standards of rail transit vocational education. To connect with the industrial chain, GRP works with Guangzhou Railway Group, Guangzhou Metro, Shenzhen Metro, Dongguan Metro, Foshan Metro, MTR (Shenzhen) and other well-known companies to formulate talent training programs, takes the lead in carrying out “order-based” training on a large scale, and establishes the long-term talent training mechanism aligning schools with enterprises, specialty with career, and students with posts.

GRP adheres to the strategy of internationalization at a higher level. The college is deeply committed to serving the national “Belt and Road Initiative” and the strategy of high-speed railway “going global”. With the Industry-education Integration Alliance, we have been actively involved in expanding international cooperation platform for rail transit by connecting with four regions: the Commonwealth of Independent States, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. With the approval of the Education Bureau of Guangdong Province, GRP signed a cooperation agreement with the Belarusian State University of Transport to co-offer the Railway Traffic Operation and Management Program (a full-time higher vocational training program). In addition, GRP has officially enrolled overseas students from Laos, Malaysia and other countries, taking the lead among vocational colleges administered by Guangzhou Municipal Government for teaching full-time overseas students.

GRP insists on moral education and achieves remarkable results. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, GRP will persist on the path of putting moral education at its core. With the orientation of “relying on the industry, taking root in Guangzhou, influencing the country and facing the world”, and the philosophy of “lifting the school to a new high by valuing quality, talents, uniqueness and culture”, GRP follows the 2035 Education Modernization Plan and contributes to the upgrading of national rail transit industry and the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It aims to build the modern vocational education system that equally values academic education and vocational training by improving its internal management system, deepening the reform on grooming inter-disciplinary technical talents by means of industry-education integration, and developing an array of programs that feature a lead by specialized programs, a support from key disciplines and coordinated development between them, all of which will constitute a high-quality technical talent training system characterized with work-integrated learning and the combination of action and knowledge. GRP will continue to strive for building a high-level vocational college with Chinese characteristics and fair international influence.
